Oxfordshire was recorded as a county in the early years of the 10th century and borders Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
The largest centre of population is the city of Oxford which is home to the world-famous Oxford University. Other major towns in the county are Banbury, Bicester, Kidlington, Chipping Norton, Carterton, Witney, Thame and Chinnor and Abingdon, Wantage, Didcot, Wallingford and Henley-on-Thames.
Oxfordshire has three areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Cotswolds in the north-west, the open chalk hills of the North Wessex Downs and wooded hills of the Chilterns in the south and south-east. The ironstone of the Cherwell uplands can be found north of the county.
