This week, we had the absolute pleasure of visiting the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Creative Industries to meet the Graphic Design students and talk all about starting their journey into the creative world of work.
We were kindly invited by Marc Austin, Course Leader, and Stephen Paxford, Senior Lecturer, to share our advice and experiences from the creative recruitment world. Representing Beyond The Book were Emma Head and Anna Smith, who presented an interactive session packed with insights, tips, and encouragement for students as they prepare to take their next steps after university.
Helping Students Take Their First Steps into the Industry
The session focused on what it really means to get started in the creative industry, and how to make those early steps count.
We talked about everything from discovering your creative strengths, to understanding how agencies and in-house studios work, and what employers look for when hiring junior designers.
Some of the topics we covered included:
• How to understand where your skills and passions best fit within the creative industry
• Building a CV and portfolio that truly represents who you are
• Making the most of LinkedIn and your online presence
• Preparing for interviews and showing your personality
• Using AI tools in a creative way to enhance your work
• Practical advice from Creative Directors working across the industry
Our message to the students was simple: be curious, be proactive, and stay authentic. Employers want to see your passion, your process, and your personality.
It’s always inspiring to spend time with the next generation of creatives and see their enthusiasm, curiosity, and drive to make their mark. The creative industry is full of opportunity for those who stay curious, keep learning, and trust in their own ideas. We have no doubt that the students we met at Wolverhampton will go on to do amazing things.
