About Northampton
Once the centre of the British shoe industry, today Northampton is a modern and thriving market town with a fascinating heritage. Northampton is a town in England’s East Midlands region. The house at 78 Derngate, remodeled by architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916–1917, is now a museum. Abington Park Museum has local history and fashion exhibits. Barnes Meadow Nature Reserve has grassland and wetland bird habitats. Sywell Country Park, built around a former reservoir, includes meadows, a playground and a native butterfly garden.
The town’s market square is one of the oldest and biggest in Britain, dating back to 1235. Leading on to Abington Street, this pedestrianised zone is a major shopping district. If this doesn’t satisfy your need for retail therapy, you could always head to one of the town centre’s two shopping centres, or the out-of-town retail parks such as Weston Favell Shopping Centre, St James Retail Park and Riverside Retail Park.
Northampton is one of the UK’s biggest towns and has been populated since the Bronze Age, but since receiving its New Town designation in 1968, it has grown and developed extensively. However, in 2000 it unsuccessfully applied for city status.
